The modern DELPHIN T8 water vacuum cleaner goes far beyond conventional cleaning methods: it thoroughly cleans floors, carpets, and upholstery and actively improves indoor air quality thanks to its patented water filter. Dirt, dust, and pollutants are efficiently trapped in the water tank. Precise and reliable laser plastic welding guarantees the high quality and durability of the water tank thanks to the tight and aesthetic connection of the components.

The water tank of the DELPHIN T8 consists of two initially separate plastic components that are permanently, tightly, and aesthetically joined using laser plastic welding. This process not only guarantees outstanding tightness—essential for functionality throughout the entire cleaning process—but also ensures high durability and a flawless appearance.

The challenge in manufacturing the DELPHIN T8 is connecting the two water tank parts. Inside the water tank, the innovative L-Lamella water swirler, rotating at around 20,000 revolutions per minute, creates a large water surface area that binds even the finest particles and pollutants in the water. This increases the water pressure on the connection between the two plastic components throughout the entire cleaning process. The tank must remain reliably leak-proof at all times. In addition to high leak-tightness requirements, the durability and aesthetics of this assembly are particularly important.

The proven joining process – laser plastic welding

Initially, the conventional adhesive bonding process was also considered. However, when comparing the two joining processes, laser plastic welding proved to be the better option due to:

  • High process reliability and online monitoring: Each welding process is precisely controlled to ensure consistent quality.
  • Low space requirements and short cycle times: Efficient production without compromising on quality.
  • Minimal heat-affected zone: Allows tight tolerances and prevents warping or material damage.
  • Low tooling costs: The simple integration and maintenance of the laser welding system significantly reduce investment and follow-up costs.
  • No consumables: Sustainable and cost-efficient.

Laser plastic welding is predominantly used today in the transmission process. In this process variant, two plastics with different absorption properties, which are caused by different types or concentrations of fillers, are welded together in an overlap joint. The plastic parts to be joined are placed on top of each other and the laser beam is focused through the plastic, which is transparent to the laser wavelength, onto the absorbing molded part, causing it to melt on the surface. Heat conduction also plasticizes the transmissive partner, resulting in a dense and durable welded joint.

Material and technology – ideal combination

When selecting the materials, the decision was made to use highly transparent polycarbonate for the transparent cover and white-colored PC/ABS for the lower section. In order to meet both the manufacturer’s visual requirements and the demands of the welding process, the white lower section is equipped with a laser absorber.

A suitable plant concept was developed in collaboration with the customer for the production of the assembly. The welding process is carried out in a well-thought-out sequence using the EVO 1600 welding system. This system from Evosys Laser GmbH is particularly well suited in this case due to its intuitive operating concept, easy process changeover, and integrated process monitoring. The standardized laser welding system uses out-of-the-box modules from the welding system manufacturer’s range.

Sustainability and quality – Made in Germany

Thanks to precise laser plastic welding, the water tank is robust, durable, and completely leak-proof. PROAIR therefore offers a 10-year warranty on the DELPHIN T8—a strong sign of quality and sustainability. The “Made in Germany” manufacturing process also ensures excellent service and responsible use of resources.
